Fort Bridgewoods was a small fort in Chatham Kent 1939 to 1941 next to the Airfield
The fort was always vulnerable, situated as it was so near to Chatham Docks. A deep bunker was being built under the fort to house the Y Station but the personnel, when off duty were always at risk. In October 1940 during the battle of Britain the area was bombed. A vehicle being the ATS Teleprinter Operators who worked at the fort suffered a direct hit from an incendiary bomb. Three ATS girls, two civilians and two volunteer drivers of theFirst Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY's) were killed
